6.5K Genset
 |
The
6.5 Onan Genset being tested before we put it in. The fuel line is simply
dropped into an available gas tank. The battery is connected. The
genset is positioned so the ehaust system hangs over the side of the table. |

Not the greatest camera shot to make my point, but notice the
muffler loosely attached and hung by hanger wire. It's that or you can
suffer through the unmuffled sound. This unit, though used, was in
exceptional condition. The governor needed adjusting. The unit was
used previously to power an arch welder. Household use requires a
"more exact" voltage consistency. The unit was producing 154
volts at no load.

The governor has three adjustments. These are
tricky and you shouldn't mess with these unless your unit is not running
properly. I first recommend an appointment with a qualified
technician. If you are on the express plan like myself, you try
things yourself. Consult your manual for adjustment instructions.
Regardless of age, you can order an operators manual from Onan. |
| This Onan 6.0 kw generator was removed from a '74 Travco
270. Still renown for its durability, the generator needed new
rings. The heads were reworked and valves were cleaned. The
rings were not replaced but the blow-by was greatly reduced. Due to
a worn governor, the generator starts throttling above 4.5 kw. The
unit is large and very heavy. A newer, smaller Onan 6.5 kw was
used as a replacement. |
