The Oakley Travco
The Oakleys
We purchased our 1976 Dodge Travco motor home in 1995 and started renovation
which included overhauling the motor and numerous other things. The
captain seats, couch and benches were removed, reupholstered, wrapped in
plastic, and put in storage, where they still remain. Then life's problems
began to set in and the motor home was also put in storage. We have been
through several years that have included, heart surgery, two other surgeries and
caring for a mother that recently passed due to cancer. Upon deciding
to retire at the end of this year, the motor home was brought out of
storage to once again begin the renovation.
To make a long story short,
after the motor home had been sitting outside for a couple of weeks, it was
plugged into the electricity to recharge things. In a short time, it was
on fire and the fire department was called. In checking, it was
determined that all the gas had been siphoned out and the two batteries had been
stolen. It is believed that when it was plugged into the electricity, with
the two batteries gone, it shorted and started a fire.
The damage was only
on the inside and in the rear area, but at this stage of life, we are reluctant
to start the renovation again. We have decided, with some regret, that we
will not continue. Our first choice is to sell the motor home to
someone younger, who would be interested in restoration. If we are
unable to find the right party, it is possible that we may decide to sell
it in parts to Travco owners needing parts for their own vehicles. We
thought that a good way for us to get the word out, was to let you know the
situation.
We look forward to hearing from you and other
Travconians.
