This Travco coach was
custom built by Foretravel for Harry & Emma Wine, my parents.
While Foretravel builds a fine coach the 1984 price was a little steep at
about $100,000. The hardware includes a Cat 250 hp, (3208
model), Allison transmission, Oshkosh frame, Onan LP generator.
The 250 hp is underpowered for a coach this size. While I
have no evidence one way or the other, I am told that Foretravel only
built 50 or so of the Travco diesel pushers. Maybe Foretravel
would provide you with some stats on the Travco's they produced. In
the four years I have owned it, I have never seen another one like it on
or off the road. I have seen a few of the Foretravel diesel
pushers with same general paint job, Foretravel name and square body
style. My step mother Mary P. Wine, tells me that in the 8 years she
and my father traveled in this coach she has only seen 4-5 exactly
like this one and that was in the early 1990's. I have
only seen a few Dodge frame Travcos on the road and enjoyed chatting
with their owners when we encountered each other. Two of them stand
out as the owners had done excellent refurbish jobs. My father, a
retired long distance truck driver, added the black tool
box on the front as he felt the coach was "light" on the
front end. He always keep the coach loaded with at least
half of the 150 gallons of #2 diesel, a full water tank and
packed weight as much forward as possible. I agree on the weight
distribution issue and added the storage box in front of the right
wheel. Only major work on this coach has been a rebuilt
3208 at 130,000 miles when the turbo charger seized causing a blown engine
and a partial paint/fiberglass job when a rear tire blew. My parents
and my step mother, were active members of the Foretravel club as
noted by the window shot showing trips they took, the Foretravel club
membership number (8964) and the Foretravel club decal. It is
interesting that the Foretravel decal has the same general shape as the
Travco decal. The coach has been to Alaska (twice), deep
into Mexico, all over the US and through a good bit of Canada. |
