Travstock 2002: Our Maiden Voyage

Our first Travstock was held in Kansas City, Missouri, on June 19 through 23.  We stayed at the beautiful Basswood Country RV Resort.  Ten Travcos and 25 occupants had a great time.  There's a lot on this page so keep scrolling down.

Travstock was Awesome!

I know many of you had to miss it and we missed you.  Below, you'll find pictures, stories, a photo album, and video clips of this first Travstock hosted by myTravco.com.  We hope this gives you incentive to make every attempt to attend next year!

Remembrances

TRAVSTOCK 2002 , The Maiden Voyage

by Bob & Susan Stone
Camdenton, Missouri

Susan and I first learned about Travstock when I discovered Tony Peregoy’s website, www.myTravco.com, while surfing the net for information about "Ol’ Ugly", our newly acquired 1974 Travco Two Seventy. We purchased this unique motor home to pull our 1925 Model T Ford to Model T meets. This well maintained coach definitely had the personality and eye appeal to go along with the old Ford. It had very low miles on the Dodge 440 power plant, everything worked and the interior upholstery had been recently replaced. The exterior fiberglass shell was in great shape, however, that avocado green stripe had to go! Last January, I was very fortunate to have a friend who owned a fiberglass boat repair shop and was going on a two week mission trip to Africa. He made me an offer I could not refuse. If I paid his painter’s wages for the two weeks, he was mine to work as I saw fit. There went the green stripe. By the time my friend returned, "Ol’ Ugly" became "Born Again"! The next month, we braved rain and snow to trailer the Model T from Central Missouri to the Central Florida Winter Model T Ford Tour in Sebring, Florida without mishap. We knew we had a winner when we received as many positive comments on the motor home as we did on the Model T Ford. We were ready to hit the road. Then along came Travstock

Ten restored classic Travco Motor Homes gathered at Basswood Country RV Park in Kansas City, Missouri, a national award winning campground, for a very well planned weekend of fun, food, music, and many Travco tales. Travco owners drove their coaches from Alabama, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Nebraska, and Kentucky to share in this unforgettable experience.

We may have been driving 30 year old coaches, but, this event was run with the video and computer technology of the twenty-first century. He had really put forth a lot of effort in planning and organizing the activities which included a trip to see the recovered Steamboat Arabia, Worlds of Fun, Oceans of Fun and a tour of the local antique shops. Each day we had one meal pot luck style and every evening we were entertained by one of two excellent musical groups or a impromptu jam session. Three of the Travco owners are members of two bands, Hula Girls and the Blue Grass Band, Spontaneous Combustion. These excellent bands have played in the Kansas City area for over ten years and have performed at several nationwide Blue Grass Festivals and are regular entertainers at the Kansas City’s casinos.

During one of our many sessions of Travco Tales, each of us agreed we had no idea what to expect as we drove to Kansas City. The name Travstock made us think of Woodstock and we wondered if we were going to be surrounded by a bunch of flower decorated buses and worn out old 60's hippies. That could not have been further from the truth. The Travco owners had gone to great efforts to restore their coaches and make them very livable and roadworthy. Attendees were of all ages and professions from a single mother and her two small children, a young doctor and his family to a couple of old USAF retirees like ourselves. The Travcos aged from the 1967 "Moby Dick" to the 1978 "Silver Bullet". The most unusual thing about the coaches was as they all looked similar, in style, on the outside, each had a slightly different floor plan. The RV park had placed us in a great spot along the shore of the lake directly across from the our pavilion. It was fun to watch the other campers, who were not fortunate enough to own a classic Travco, walk by and stop to admire the line up. One couple shared tales of when they used to own a Travco and of the many good memories they had of it.

My wife’s favorite time was early each morning when the latest edition of the Travstock Tattler was delivered to our door step. The Tattler was a one page newspaper complete with colored pictures that recapped the previous days activities, told about today’s schedule, and included a few bits of Travco Trivia, such as " Smile when you see one of those classic GMC motor homes go by, their interiors were manufactured by Travco!"  It was a welcomed change to kick back with your first cup of coffee and read a newspaper containing only good news!

After the final evening pot luck dinner we enjoyed a computerized video slide show complete with music and narrative. It was a great recap of the extended weekend and an invitation to next year’s Travstock 2003.

There are over 350 Travco owners registered on www.myTravco.com, ten coaches and 25 persons ventured forth on the Travstock maiden voyage. We made a lot of new friends and hopefully, next year our numbers will grow. The location will be determined nearest the center of the greatest concentration of those committed to attend. So check the Travco website for updates and if you are a Travco owner and not registered, please sign up and send a picture. This site is the authority for the Travco Motor Home and includes photographs, Travco history, manuals and sales brochures, parts locator, the very informative Forum, and classified advertising for Travcos and related items wanted or for sale.

To find out more about Spontaneous Combustion and their unique form of "Bluerock" music, look up their website at www.spontane.net.

Travstock Tattler

Of course, we had to have a special newsletter for Travstock.  The Travstock Tattler was born!  This daily dispatch was filled  with stories about our events, an agenda for the coming day, photos, captions, and some Travco trivia.

You can read the Tattlers here.

Certificates

All members of our first Travstock received Charter Member certificates.   Mine is proudly displayed in my Travco.  The picture below it is the group photo shown above.

In addition, all attendees received a myTravco.com window decal.  Now, wherever you go, people can find your Travco on the web.

Alas, the dinners, drinks, conversations, meetings, dancing, fun, and frolic had to come to and end.  It was with great regret that we all said our good-byes and ventured toward our home ports.  But, we will return again in just one short year.

We hope to see all of you at Travstock 2003!
