Courtesy of Court Nederveld's original Travco site... Your Travcossilent_bob13@hotmail.com Sander i spotted one in Bracebridge (a small town in ontario) and the second i saw it i needed one!!! this is by far the greatest thing i have ever seen on the road. It looked like an earlier model than most of the ones on this page, i took a couple pictures of it and i should have them in a few weeks. It was green in colour and had weathered alright (it looked a bit rough) but i need to know where i can get a 50's/60's travco and for how much thanks 9/30/99 Thanks for maintaining the Travco Website. Hope you soon join the fleet again. We are already in the "Roll Call" but we have changed our email address so if you could update your database it would be appreciated. Please change our email address from: Regal55@aol.com to: king5575@mediaone.net Thanks, Jerry 9/30/99 Consider it done! So..let me say again what appreciation we have for the site and your efforts, we support you and thank you.And of course our "Travie" appreciates you too, She definately has feelings and a great love and joy for the open road (or so we insist). Here's hoping this note makes it to the site, so we (and our friends in Tenn and Mich) can make note. We indeed are incessant advocates of the Travco and are always trying to convince our friends that they too should get in on the "Travco Craze"..so far two actually bought Travcos and are currently in process of restoration. Keep up the good work...got to go for now, check you later. Jim 9/30/99 Webmaster: Unfortunately, either I didn't get your previous email or had a major brain cramp. Jim Galbraith 9/3/99 Hi Court, I just recently found this sight. It looks like you have a lot of interesting stuff here. I would be interested in taking it over in time. I am the proud owner of a 1967 270 model. I am doing a full restoration and upgrade. I have been in contact with Foretravel and a company called Veet industries. Veet bought a ton of Travco inventory at Auction. Foretravel bought the assembly plant. I am tring to get the source info on the parts if at all possible. I am tring to gather all the info and parts I can. Sort of like Classic Camaro is dedicated to Chevy Camaro's. There was others that bought parts at Auction and I am working on getting hold of the Auction company to find who bought em. Well I'll talk to you soon I guess. Keep up the good work. Thanks Again Paul Cassitto 8/13/99 tbrown1418@aol.com Terry Brown 1971 Double Oak, Texas Finally . . . I ran across your site after finding the Airstreams, GMC's, etc. I really didn't think I would find a site devoted to the Travco. Thanks for being on the web. It's nice to know there are others that have an appreciation for the "older" Travco motorhomes. Keep up the good work. Terry 8/13/99 Persafal@aol.comGerard "Gerry" Coppa 1968 Shreveport, Louisiana HI, I just got home from "Tripple" bypass surgery and am looking forward to total recovery and then back on the road again. I haven't replaced windshields yet and hope to get that done while I am up on blocks. heh heh I am planing a trip to Ohio as soon as all ducks get in a row. Hope to see you on the road. Gerry 8/13/99 I just logged onto your Website and really got a kick out of it (particularly the music). I had no idea there was such a cult of Travconians out there. I notices from the roll call, that the mid-east was conspicuously missing, so . . . here we are! My husband and I just purchased a 1973--great condition, with the exception of the usual problems with one that's been unused for a while. (It's actually one of our newer posessions, considering we own a 1967 wooden deadrise boat, as well as a 72' 1946 wooden "buy boat.") We made our "maiden voyage" to Swansboro, NC, last weekend. I noticed you haven't updated your website since March, so I hope you're still checkin' in and updating. Please add us to your roll call! It's been up and down the Alcan several times and my son and his wife lived in it for the first year of their marriage. It has a plate on the dash that says it was built for Clide S. Sherrod. It still runs and has had to have little work done on it. People call it the Torpedo. What's neat is that when traveling down the highway in it, upon seeing another Travco, you find that they are pointing at you just like you are pointin at them! We've had the Grand Ole Lady since 1985. I have been trying to get together with other Travco owners for some time. I bought my Travco, a 220 square back, from a grain farmer in North Dakota. They used it to get away from the horrible winters there. the Travco only had 65K on it, but needed tires, suspension upgrades and a front end rebuild. It has the A3 440 and can really scoot. I do wish it had a bit longer legs. I am not sure what the gear ratio is but my guess would put it 4.10 or lower! Travco motorhomes are the best. Well made and meant to last a lifetime. randy gazdag 1973 220 westland, michigan I bought my '73 in '92. I found it parked under a tree in the back yard of an older fellow in Port Huron Michigan It has the 413 high performance engine. I would like to know what kind of gas milage this motor should be getting? Right now it gets 6 to 6.5 mph. Do the big dodge motors get this kind of milage? 3/28/99 Tim and Gena Massey 1968 Danville Illinois We purchased our Travco about 3 years ago at a rummage sale. At the time it had not been driven in several years due to a cracked 318 block....thats what happens when you dont use anit-freeze in illinois. We talked to other local travco owners about the driveability with the 318 and decided to put in a 440 instead. It was lots of work to make everthing fit....but the extra power is worth it. It ran really well but looked terrible and we still had 2 weeks before we were to leave on vacation....so my wife and I sanded off all the ugly brown paint and painted it white with blue lower part and blue and mauve stripes midway up. The next summer we redid the interior and modernized the upholstery and appliances. I have lots of stories to tell about mechanical problems with doing the drivetrain upgrade and rebuilding everything from end to end and also our first long trip in our reborn Travco. I was stricken with TRAVCO FEVER several years ago when I watched one sell at an estate auction for $1500 and I havn't recocerd since. Now, we have just adopted a 1967 26 ft that is the UGLIEST color combo I've ever seen, but it sort of grows on you and stepping inside is like going back to the 60's. It has the 318 high performance engine but needs a lot of little things done as expected. For starters, the left exhaust manifold is cracked badly, and trips to the junkyard have been "That's really old-never saw one quite like it" experiences. Also need manuals if any reproductions are available. We live in central Indiana 5 mi off I70 exit 51 and would welcome any visits from fellow Travconians. Have plenty of parking space, and a private airstrip if you're into airplanes too. If not you're still welcome.3/7/99 RICK LOZINSKI 70 TUCSON AZ. have a 70 TRAVCO bought new by my dad in sept 69 in Altoona Pa. The unit has been stored inside for 23 years except when taken on trips. We have approximately 131,000 mile on the unit. We are interested in refurbishing it. We replaced it with a new unit last year. 3/7/99 flanker76108flanker@yahoo.com Mike Waite 1971/270 27ft 413dodge Fort Worth texas I sent this off once, but was in shock to find this on the internet and didn't ask very good questions except that I needed everything I can get. But I do have one direct question I hope eather you or anyone out there can tell me. My travco is in good shape. Most every thing works. But for NO good reason that I can see,it has no in dash air ,only heat. Why would anyone build a unit that had to run a power unit to run a roof airconditioner going down the road!?Is there a add-on dash unit one could install? And while we are on the subject,is there a rear heater available that runs on the engine cooling system? I admit that Ive been fixing it up and havnt had it on the road, but that front heater sure dosen't seem like it could heat the entire motor home in cold weather. Are you expected to use the furnace going down the road too? Dont want to sount picky, but some of this makes no sence.Im a first time moterhome owner and Im having a ball fixing this ole girl up. Best thing I did! was install new carpet and BURN that awful green shage.By the way HI LOW auto parts has some usable items. For one thing, thay had a batt isolation switch for less than half what a moterhome dealer wanted for the same thing. Thay also have good supply od D.C. lights both external and internal. Thay also got me a oil pump for a 413 when every one else told me there is no such thing as a 413 dodge engine. I found a 70 model travco in the wreacking yard and bought it for parts(no motor) but I have spare wheels ,drums, tires and all the chases parts. Once I check my owne unit and am sure I don't need some of the parts, I'll make thim available to anyone at my cost(and that isnt much). Hope to see a return message soon. Need info. I would like to locate the 318 Power Pack (carb., intake manifold and air cleaner) that was advertised as a factory option to juice up the 318. A hotter coil and split fire plugs seem to have helped a little. Have searched Flowmaster, Hedman etc. ... is there any header kits available for the 1964 dodge 318??? My exhaust sytem is rotted out and would like to try and increase performance with a bolt-on set of headers. 2/21/99 kerry.edwards@rrcc.cccoes.edu Kerry Edwards 1971:220 Denver, CO I just bought my Travco. It only has 22800 miles on it. It has been recarpeted to remove the ugly greens and the seatcushions redone in contemporary styles. It has the 413 engine. Do you know what three speed automatice they coupled to that? Do you know if the generator starting battery is isolated from the engine battery so that you can run the lights of that battery w/o worrying about not being able to start the engine.2/21/99 gmobbs@aristotle.ner George Mobbs 1967 Arkansas I sent my previous message before I had seen anywhere near all of your website, and did not realize that it would be posted anywhere at that time. My fingers were typing faster than my brain working when I stated that the rear end was a Budd limited slip differential. I believe that it is a Dana limited slip differential. I would also like to find some original lens covers for the running lights, both red and amber. I have one broken one, and several that look kinda bad. I believe they were "cat's eye" brand or style. Thanks for the Great Website! Every time I look, I seem to find something I had not found before. I am so glad to finally find this resource. Bought my Travco when it was 2 years old in 1971. Currently in the process of replacing my 17x6 Budd split rim wheels with Budd 19.5x6 wheels so I can install 8R19.5 radials and get rid of the old nylon thumpers. So far have found 2 19.5x6 wheels so I now have 2 radials on the front. Would like to find 4 more for the back, but the 5 lug wheels are hard to find. Sure am glad to find this site I have owned my 1969 Travco 270 since it was new. I had it off the road for a few years after I bought a 1984 Pace Arrow, but I could never part with the old girl. I sold the Fleetwood Pace Arrow, It always leaked and the quality control was lousy. Now I am happily restoring my old 69 to put it back on the road. Sure am happy to find so many other Travco lovers out there. I am in the process of replacing my split rim five lug 17 inch wheels with 19.5 solid rims so that I can mount radials. I have scoured junkyards all over California and have finally collected seven 19.5 inch wheels. It was a struggle. but it was worth it. Ray Westbrook, Paradise CA. Our rigs are an upbeat expression of a bunch of people who are active and alive! I guess I wouldn't mind it if the music was upbeat and fun. Also, the crawler takes so much time to load, and slows the site down so much, that many friends I've put on th the site give up in frustration. Thanks, Robin PS: Sorry to hear of your loss (Blue Streak). It was the only Travco I've ever seen with a drivers-side door. Very rare, indeed.2/5/99 Webmaster here: Morose. gloomy and maudlin are three words that I would never associate with Led Zeppellin. Page and Plant, probably two of the top 25 artists in history (and oh by the way, very much alive and active and performing to sold out concerts) and you want them removed? Besides, what better, than the raw power and vitality of the music that changed the world to reflect an upbeat expression of a bunch of people who are active and alive! Next you'll tell me you want Hansen playing in the background. But even if those are not reason enough to keep the music as it is, there is the tiny matter of the fact that the Webmaster still, after all these years, really, really, really likes Led Zeppellin. Now, if I ever decide to charge admitance to the site then maybe, just maybe there will be some kind of upbeat Muzak for folks to shop by. Please advise kimmelking@aol.com 12/24/98 Hey Guys: The Blue Streak did a great job, other than the dash fire. Good thing I remembered the master switch and there were fire extinguishers aboard (we didn't have to use em). Once I pulled over to the side of the road, identified the problem and turned off the master, the smoke subsided and I could pull the panel off behind the brake pedal. I saw a main red wire (#B or #10 gage) that was kinda crinkled and melted. I cut it which of course eliminated all power to the coach. I then hot wired the coil, arc'd across the solenoid with my screwdriver and she cranked right up. With no power to anything other then the ignition, we had to hightail it home before the sunset (we just made it). We still continued at 65 MPH with no other hiccups. Today, the first thing on the agenda was to give Blue Streak a much needed bath. I first pressure washed the exterior, then mixed 50:50 Clorox and water, and used a long handled scrub brush to get all the mold off. Then, scrubbed her with Ajax (works even on a Ferrari finish, or even on Pony cause it is finer that 1000 grit wet or dry sandpaper), another pressure wash rinse, then a Sunlight detergent wash, final rinse and wow! Sure she really needs a paint job but at least we now can appreciate her in her birthday suit and not be embarrassed. Maybe we will just paint the stripe and touch up the white for awhile. Thanks again for allowing us to use your tag to come home. Please sign the title but leave the purchaser name blank, as I'm not sure today what name I'm registering her in. Jack & Chris 12/3/98 sl78t@cc.usu.edu Alan Miller 73, wht & blue sister ship Logan UT, I live in it while in school Court, While conversing with a travcoite I realized there may be others that should know this. When traveling one should ALWAYS turn off the propane at the tank. Propane expands 250 times when going from a liquid (what you buy) to a vapor (what you burn). When traveling the liquid can slosh around and send a slug of it down the line. When it gets to the pilot light and expands 250 times it is already on fire. Things get memorable about this point. This is what burns many to the water line on the highway. (I built heating systems for 2 yrs and this never crossed my mind, traveled the length of this state twice before my old employer suggested it, wanted to keep the beer cold ya know) I sure enjoyed your stories especially the 2nd one. We're looking forward to many adventures motoring across the U.S. Thanks for all the info included in your site. Jodie 7/18/98 Hi, Court! Charles (7 year old son) and I are back after a two week adventure around Florida! It began a bit more shakey than it ended! I knew the Travco had a manifold leak (right side) so I investigated headers, made an appointment, took it in. Simple? Not quite. "These studs need to be removed and we can't do it." This was Friday ... the trip was to begin the following Wednesday. I found a mechanic that worked weekends (a good one, too!). "I don't recommend headers at all. " Plus, it would cost $30.00 per stud if they gave him a problem. The lesser of the evils was to go with a stock header ($410.00 - headers for both sides is $180.00). A day late and $1,000 later, we started out! I smelled something burning. Dropped by the place. The front brake calipers were sticking. It would be a week. Our reservations for Ft. Wilderness were to begin the following Monday. After weighing the risks, we headed to Port St. Joe (St. Josephs State Park - Third in the US for beaches). Fortunately the brakes loosened up. On our way to our second stop (Homosassa Springs), *wham* - we were hit by lots of wind from a semi. That night I noticed a very large bug stuck between the center of the windshields and the gasket. The two windshields were falling in on us! Thanks to a fan mounted in front of the center of the two windshields and a flashlight, we continued on our trek (Tropical Palms near Ft. Wilderness). I called Foretravel of Tampa and made an appointment to replace the gasket. They were very nice and accomodating. The gasket was available from Texas and would be in by my appointment time. Charles and I then spent five days at Ft. Wilderness, drove carfefully to Tampa and had the gasket and windshields put in. The very first storm in over two weeks also occurred while they were working (drove into a service bay). With gasket in place, we were off to Ocala (Silver Springs) and Manatee State Park. Looked up and part of one windshield was creeping out of the gasket. So, off to Tampa via Crystal River. We got the windshield fixed, visited the Tampa Aquarium, and left for Pensacola with a stop at Alligator Point. The Travco performed very well and we ended up better off than we began. The people at Foretravel were very nice and were happy to see a Travco! I *did* get a tour of a new Foretravel - very nice, and *very* mechanic friendly. I will need to replace the left manifold in the future and I haven't forgotten about the brake calipers that should be in. I am not convinced that headers are not a viable alternative. Headman Hedders wrote, "Ah, the age old debate continues. Hedders do require some maintenance. But the performance gains you get back are way beyond the required maintenance. The "Repair Guy" you spoke with was correct in that you should use heat shields at the spark plug boots, but do not wrap the hedder, it will rot the hedder quickly. You will just have to tighten the bolts more often, and maybe change gaskets more often as well." Thus ends my report! Mark P.S. Any word on Travstock '98? I've heard nothing from Damon. There really isn't anything interesting in Ft. Walton Beach. 7/13/98 winfield43@aol.com John Cooke & Chris St.John 1976 Connecticut She's a class C, L'Esprit the we bought about 4 years ago for about $3200. We totally re-did her in & out. We also installed a dual brake master cyl for safety. The rear end was built out of a 1974 ford station wagon to get the correct gear ratio of 3.23 and used the original outer tubes of the dodge, then used late model brake backing plates with 1 inch spacers to be able to run late drums with 8 lug studs. a 1977 dodge motorhome steering box and mounting bracket was used and steering linkage was fabricated from race car components. I added extra leaves to the springs to make up for the added weight of the diesel. I added an extra fuel tank, cruise control, and completely rebuilt the interior from the frame up, new floor, paneling and ceiling. all of the appliance have been upgraded to total electric. The exterior was sanded down to the gelcoat, the seam across the top was fiberglassed then sealed with epoxy then a base coat cleal coat paint was applied. the side windows were replaced with solid glass to make our motorhome extremly quiet. We also insulated the floors.I hope these upgrades will inspire other travco owners to the endless possibilites of what can be done to our beloved home away from home.We use ours to pull a 20 foot race trailer to haul our Top Fuel Harley Davidson and crew to race tracks across America. We can't wait to get it 'on-the-road'! info@cantops.com We have a web site that I will be adding pictures also. It is www.cantops.com Would you add this also to our rollcall? We are going to call our Travco "Plum Crazy" as this is the color that we added in front and rear dipped-in areas and are going to do the stripe. Your site is very exciting for us. I am printing it off a putting it into a book to carry with us. I was waiting to get on the rollcall b/4 printing. Thanks "The Grays 6/14/98 tperegoy@mindspring.com Tony Peregoy 74 270 Lanett, Alabama Greetings fellow Travconians! The "Bullet" has just returned us safely to this planet, or at least the Southeast. We loaded up the family, me, my wife, my dad, and our 5 boys, (yes, you read it right) and headed to the Grand Canyon. She held up beautifully. Of course she turned a few heads. Half the time it was because of how great this older RV looked. The other half of the time was how this RV looked parked next to some zillion dollar rolling palaces. Of she was still pretty, just obviously not of the same era. Oh, I said "to this planet" ... because the roads out in the southwest are horrible. We couldn't believe it. The roads would bounce and bang us hard. We usually slowed down, rode out of the regular tire tracks, used the gentler left lane, etc., but sometimes there was just no resolution. We had a few minor problems I'll mention for others' benefit. The roads were SOOOOO rough, both front shocks broke the bolts attaching them to the leaf springs. We stopped at a hardware store and bought replacements. No tire problems at all. Engine and transmission ran like a champ and used half a quart of oil! We did replace the fuel filter. On our way back, I started smelling gasoline faintly, so at the next rest stop, I looked underneath and the pump diaphram was leaking. We had a spare, change it in twenty minutes while my wife made lunch for the rug rats, and away we went. That's it. No other problems at all. I would suggest to eveyone to take spare parts and tools on any journey outside of home territory. Even if you can't do the work, some parts houses in remote areas may not carry the part you need. Oh well, it's great to be back, the kids had a great time, we got lots of pictures, the we're so proud of our Travco. See you on the open road! Tony Peregoy 6/14/98 Thanks for listing "Suite Charoit" and me. I don't know why I didn't do a search for Travco before this. Lived in my Travco for several years, both on the road and stationary. Extensive restoration in the past and some still ongoing. Dodge 440, positrol steering, two holding tanks, Firestone air bags, huge frig, new windows on each side, Imron aircraft paint job, re-chromed bumpers, roof rack, new airconditioning, new "Captain's" chairs, 10' fold boat on the side, 22' awning, and the list goes on. Have owned this '64 since 1985, and could not imagine owning any other motorhome. Thanks for the great site. Will check in often. Robin San Diego 6/7/98 Hi Court, Haven't been in touch lately. I've been too busy working on my Travco. We're traveling to the Gradn Canyon in 2 weeks. Round trip will be about 3700 miles. I wanted to tell you about my generator. It is a Onan 6.0 and runs great. I thought it was fairly loud but what the hay. I added a second AC on the rear. It looks just like the one on the front. The generator should have the power but it ran rough under the load. It started to vibrate and the power would cycle on and off. I was told it needed a tune up so I tookit to the Onan mechanics. They aren't cheap but they are honest. They checked fuel pump, plugs, wires, points, and everything else. They hooked it up to a load bank that would allow them to tune it under a 6000 watt load. Anyway, it had a broken condensor wire and wasn't firing strong on one side, hence the vibration. There were a few other minor problems. I was only creating 2000 watts of power. Before I added a second AC, I thought it ran fine, and wasn't aware it had a problem. Under $300 later, I'm creating 6300 watts, 60 hertz and enough power to run 2 ACs, TVs, microwave, and whatever. Some of the best money I've spent so far. Oh, about the "loud" generator... I needed a new muffler. Had the Onan man search manuals several times to confirm he had found my mufler, it was available, and for just over $600, he could have me one. I, of course, had him order a couple... oh sure. $600 for a muffler? Get real! Finally, I found out that a generic replacement could be had for $60. I bought it and guess what, looks almost exactly like the muffler that was on it. Much quieter now. I don't think those $600 mufflers are selling like hotcakes either. If any other Travconians will be in the grand Canyon the first week of June, please let me know. In the 70's I owned a 1968 270, last summer I bought my 1975 Travco 320. Last year I was recruited last summer by AMD (computer chip manufacturer) in Austin, Texas and decided since I didn't know much about Austin, to buy a motorhome and live in it for a while. Was fortunate to find a 1975 Travco 320 for sale in Rockford, IL (I lived in a suburb of Chicago at that time). It was in very decent shape, I made an offer, and bought it a few days later. Cleaned it up a little, changed all the fluids, and loaded it (completely) for the big move. Was planning to pull my Chevy Astro van behind the Travco with a towbar, but found that to be too expensive, and not very safe. Instead, loaded my van with my motorcycle, bicycle, tools, etc. and put it on a U-Haul car trailer and towed it behind the Travco. So far everything was going fairly smoothly, even though it was taking longer than expected. After loading everything at my place, I drove over to my father's house to pick up a few last items. It was now Saturday AM and my new job started Monday AM. By 8:30AM I finally got all loaded (and I mean loaded, like a moving truck is "loaded"), and I was ready to go. But, the Travco would not restart. Sounded like the battery was dead! Tried to charge the battery, tried to jump start it, still nothing. After trying quite a few other things, figured out that the starter had just died and needed to be replaced. I was parked in the street in front of my father's house at the time of the failure. My father drove me to the auto parts store to buy a starter for the Chrysler 440 V-8. There was no special truck or motorhome version, so we took what they had, also got a Dodge pickup truck service manual since all the mechanicals are the same. We came back and I unpacked all my tools from the Astro van, and crawled under the Travco to swap out the starter. Fortunately, there is a 5 HP air compressor in my father garage and I was able to use my air tools. After the replacement, I nervously turned the key, and it started right up! I repacked, cleaned up and fueled up and was finally on the road at 7:30PM with 1200 miles to drive before starting a new job, in less than 37 hours. By this time, I had gotten only about 11 hours sleep in the last 3 days, but I was "wired" and ready to drive. Left Naperville, IL and drove to the middle of Illinois before pulling into a rest stop. Was afraid to stop the engine (I had left it on during the refueling stop also), so left it running, locked the door and slept about 4 hours. Daylight awoke me, so took off again. Got into southern Missouri by 9:30 Sunday (the Travco had no problem at 70MPH pulling a loaded trailer), gassed up, took a 1-hour cat-nap and drove again. Drove across Arkansas as fast as possible, but that was no where near as fast as I was able to drive in IL or MO. The Interstate roads in AR are AWFUL. It was like they poured every 20' section of the road as a separate casting, not as a continuos pour. Couldn't drive any faster than about 55-60 before the vibration got too bad. By 5:30 was through most of AR, and was on target to get to Texarkana by 6:30 PM. Started to smell burning rubber through one of the windows that had vibrated open, so I pulled off the side of the road and inspected the rig. Had a blow-out on the inside left dual on the rear axle. Knew there was no way I could fix it, and had no extra money to call a big mobile service rig, and my insurance would not cover towing to the next town. Decided my best idea was to drive slowly on the shoulder of the road, Texarkana was only about 50 miles away. At 20MPH, I could get there in about 2.5hrs. Not a good plan, but the best I had at the moment. Drove about 8 miles, when I saw a small sign-"Diesel, Next Exit". This wasn't a big official sign, just a little sign on a fence. Figured if they sold diesel fuel, they might know someone who could change truck type tires (I had a good spare). Pulled of at the nest exit, saw a 60's style station on the left, and next to it a older gas station that was now a tire shop! Saw tires everywhere, a farm tractor, an older man talking to the driver of a horse trailer, a woman reading a magazine, and a teenager working on a tire. Asked the older man if they could change my tire, he said "Sure, I'll have the nephew do it." Parked the Travco by their shop, showed them the bad tire and the spare, and went inside for another nap. About an hour later, the nephew knocked on my door and said the tire was done. The nephew was not very experienced, certainly wasn't very fast, but he was thorough. I then realized that my funds were quite low, so when he said the bill was only $20, I could (almost) kiss him! Got into Texarkana about 8:30PM Sunday, made Dallas by 12:30AM, found a rest stop south of Dallas and took another nap. After a 2 hour rest, started again (by the way, the engine was still running continuously), and got the edge of Austin by 6:20AM, less than 2 hours before I was scheduled to start my new job. Finally found the RV park I had talked to on the phone, but they were closed until 9:00AM. Pulled into the first motel I saw that had a parking lot big enough to turn my 50+ foot rig around in. Checked in, had them call a cab, and took a shower. Made it to the orientation session scheduled for 8:00 by about 8:15 and filed in all my paperwork. Got my name badge and I was officially a new employee. Later that week, I moved into the RV park and have lived in the motorhome from September 1997 to now (April 1998). Am buying some property now (bid got accepted this very AM), so will be moving at the end of May or early in June to new place. Love the Travco, and the amount that I saved living in it for the 9 month (instead of renting an apartment) will have paid for most of what I originally spent to buy it. Plus, I will have it to travel in, for the future.Would you like photos of my Travco 320? They are not very common. I took pix of it when I first got to Austin and still had the trailer and Astro van attached. How do you want them scanned? Mark 5/10/98 rgarrett@mailserv.maxinet.com Ron 1965 Orland, Ca. I too, have a Travco and am in the process of remodeling it. I have had lots of trouble with the brakes. Now, I am trying to decide on a color scheme for the paint. I will also go back inside and re-panel what I have already paneled. I enjoy it alot. The previous owner put a two-speed rearend in and it is very helpful when pulling my tow-vehicle up the hills. I camp in more remote areas and the lower gearing helps to get around on the steeper roads. When they put the rearend in, it also raised the vehicle ground clearance. Through an old High School friend, I happened onto this Motor Home, sitting virtually abandoned. It is A Model 270 with the "High Performance" 413 engine, and the odo shows just under 60,000 miles. It has the three-burner Magic Chef with oven, a 110/lpg fridge that works (so far) on 110, a busted water heater tank, and the smoothest running Kohler four cylinder, water cooled 6.5 kw generator I've ever seen. It still has five-bolt 17 inch, split-rim wheels, and just today I found four Michelin radials to fit it, at about $130 each. There - I've told you everything I know about it, except the engine starts immediately, runs and sounds STRONG, and the transmission shifts smoothly. Other than some mouse/pine squirrel nesting, and some wasp nesting, it liiks and feels like the perfect learner's project. Bolus Litchfield, CT A Travco story. I bought a 1968 Travco a year ago. An older couple had the coach for the last 20 years and hadnt used it in the last 13. It had always been parked on pavement, so there was no rot underneath. It needed a little headliner work but overall was in good shape. We dragged it on a detachable trailer and brought it home. In the process of getting it to go and stop, I noticed some peculiarities. There is a tag that says This Vehical Conforms To All 1968 Safety Standards, but it only has a single compartment mastercylinder, thereby not having safety brakes. A friend of mine has a Travco that is also a 68 and it has them. Also his has 6 lug wheels and mine has a big 5 lug pattern. Anyway, in the end it wouldnt wind up mattering. It didnt take long before I decided that it was all coming out. I wasnt happy with the way it would go or stop. As luck would have it there was a shot motorhome on a 78 Dodge chassis for sale. It was just what the doctor ordered. A 440 with a 4:10 rearend and 19.5 radials. Anti-sway bars front and back. Disc brakes on the front and 4 wide by 15 on the back with a hydraulic assist off the power steering pump. It actually wasnt that bad of a swap. Most thing fit right in with no drilling or welding required. It was easiest to change everthing, including the steering box and the radiator. The only thing that I didnt change was the springs. They seem fine and the widths are different so it would have been a pain. Overall I think I had to drill 10 holes. Not bad. This leaves me with a large number of Travco parts. I have a radiator, steering box, rebuilt 318 with a 727 automatic, 5 lug axles 4:88 ratio, a rear brake booster, 17 rims with ok tires and various other parts. If anyone is interested in these parts, I can be reached at jsbolus@excitemail.com. Thanks 3/13/98 Kenneth Lee & Irene Hausgen Elsberry, Missouri I have owned my 1968 Travco since 1985. Travcos rule!!!2/28/98 Jerry & Diane King West Bloomfield, Michigan Just thought I would sign in to your Roll Call.We received the 1970 Travco as a gift from my Father. He and my Mother toured in the Travco until her death in 1990. They retired in 1970 and full-time motorhomed for about four years before buying a home in Florida. After that they wintered in Florida and toured the rest of the year. They were the original owners and picked up the motorhome from the factory in Brown City, Michigan. They joined the "Travco Motorcaders" and enjoyed going to many of the rallies. In the beginning the "Motorcaders" were factory sponsored, the rallies were coordinated by, and included factory Reps. and Mechanics. Since 1990 and thru 1995 the Motorhome only traveled from Florida to Michigan and back to Florida, it didn't go any where in 1996. At Easter of last year (1997) I and the family drove it back to Michigan from Florida. We planned a trip out west for July and I had the steering aligned and inspected, I also had the brakes checked and replaced the rear wheel brake cylinders. Except for a stuck choke the trip out West was free of mechanical problems. We traveled from Detroit to Denver to Moab, Utah (Arches Nat Park), then North to Yellowstone Nat Park and then East to Mt Rushmore and finally back home to Detroit. In all we traveled about 5000 miles, not bad for a twenty-eight year old motorhome with 125,000 miles and a 318 engine. Now I know why my folks enjoyed the motorhome so much. When they first bought it they were only going to keep it for a year or two. It must have been even more fun and exciting in the less crowded early days of motorhoming! I would like to find some one that know about the brake system. I am loosing fluid in the rear, I can find no leaks anywhere but I have a soft peddle and have to add fluid. I was told it may be the boosters about half way back that supplys better breaking for the rear. If someone has any information on this i would like to know. I have only run across 1 other here in Bakersfield since I purchased this one 3 years ago. His is a 1973 and we talk every so ofter about them. He has not used his in 5 years. Tepping Washington D.C. Bob LeBleu 1968 from:Cordova,TN Court, I thought I would drop a line on our first adventure with the newly aquired 1968 270...... We purchased the Travco from a friend of ours who stored it in Jacksonville Florida at his son's house. Our friend is a full timer who (up until last Thursday) owns three coaches. We arrived in Jacksonville at 10 am Turkey Day, got a cup of coffee and did the perverbial walk around. We loaded our gear and off we went to Crystal River on the west coast of Fla. for our first stop and assessment of the crazy decision of buying a 30 year old motorhome. Well, everything went fine....it just took us 4 hours to drive approximately 200 miles. Not too bad all things concidered. We stayed the night with friends and left the next day at noon for the trip back to Memphis. What a nice drive up Hwy 19 with the windows open and warm air coming in. It was a welcome change from the dreary weather we had been having in Memphis. We made it just west of Tallahassee for the night and hooked up to shore power in no time. The next morning we left about 5am and headed for Dothan Alabama and we hoped the last leg of the trip home. RAIN. It rained for 8-10 hrs. Good thing is we found out where the buggy leaks.....Windshield and forward Roof Air. The Windshield will be the difficult one to fix. We got home just before 5pm and unloaded, had Stone Crab Claws for dinner and popped in a movie.........I don;t remember anything after about 8pm............ Not very exciting for a first trip but not bad for having no tow vehicle either. Deb's knuckles are returning to normal after having placed a death grip on the co-pilot seat during all the rain and winds we encountered while traveling through the mountains around Birmingham. Oh, I almost forgot, Thank the guy who invented Rain-X.........The wipers went out about an hour into the rain.............. Bob and Deb 12/1/97 Court, We made it to Colorado and are now in California. It was a pretty good trip, but not perfect. When the engine was replaced near Gaylord in lower Michigan, we made a short trip to my sisters (150 miles) and listened as the "clack-clack"; sound from a warped exhaust manifold got louder and louder. So we returned to Gaylord the next day and it was removed, ground and replaced. The young man who installed the engine told his boss he could hear the other side, also. The boss came to me and told me he could not hear it but wanted me to listen. I did, didn't hear a thing. We went on our way. But after about 300 miles it started the "clack-clack" again. Other than a little rain and cool evenings, the trip to Colorado Springs was OK, until we got to the city limits. Then odd things began to happen, loss of power, odd sounds from underneath, and slow to leave a stop light. It was the transmission, which had been rebuilt the previous year. Bolts holding the transmission oil pan were loose and we had lost 2+ quarts of fluid on the trip. Refilling it took care of the problem and I have been checking it closely since - soon it will be in the shop getting a new filter and gasket. When we arrived in Colorado Springs it was just after a tremendous snow storm. Our daughter was standing in her driveway when we arrived at her home, holding a show shovel in each hand! Nice greeting. From Colorado to California was a pleasant trip, except for the "clack-clack". We stopped at some nice parks, met a lot of very friendly folks. We are now in our Coast to Coast home park in Ramona, California. To help recoup some of the added expense we have had this year we are volunteers this year. In return for 25 hours per week, between the two of us, we have a permanent site with full hookups, cable TV (we should have enough to entertain us with cable and the satellite) and our own telephone outlet. It will be great to enjoy the internet, if I can find an ISP with a local access number from this park. Did you get the picture of "Sherman the Pomeranian's House?" I mail it to you Ada address just before you left for Florida. Enjoyed reading about your trip. It brought back memories of our first time out as full-timers. As soon as I get the internet going we will be looking at the Travco page. Have a great Thanksgiving Day!(11/25/97) Steve Lauberth, Tim Madden & Jason Cansler Kansas City, Kansas11/25/97 The three of us purchased our 1975 baby "Eddie" this summer. We are relatively young parents at 26, 26 and 23 years old. We remodeled the whole interior. The cabinets were sprayed a light grey. All the carpeting was replaced. In the main cabin floor is a dark grey carpet and the pilot and rear bed area is a light grey, fleck, berber carpet. The kitchen floor is covered with black marble vinyl tile. The couch / bunk bed is now covered in black velvet. We also purchased new grey captain chairs for the pilot and co-pilot. One of the coolest things we did was with the refrigerator. We took the wood panels off to put vinyl tile on them, but underneath the panels iare aluminun panels. So we took a 6" circular disk and a drill and brushed the aluminum. It turned out incredible. So we did it to the stove also. But this was a little more difficult because its steel and its shape. We recovered the walls of the bathroom with a white marble contact paper. We also installed a TV, VCR and a CD player. We have something that no Travco has...a motorized, 18" disco ball with spotlight! We installed it between the two captain chairs on the ceiling. We spent about two long weeks remodeling the interior. Now we have a 70's exterior and a 90's interior. Quite a contrast. The original orange carpeting had to go. We spent less than $1000 to make this amazing tranformation. I'll send pictures at a later date. Greetings fellow Travconian! I had to tell you about my latest little outing. I drove the Dodge Mahal to the famed Auburn - Alabama football clash this past weekend. There were an estimated 1,500 RVs parked among the tens of thousands of cars. Placing warranted trust in our Travco, we just added food and water (for us not the Travco) and away we went. Proudly, I proclaim we didn't have any problems the entire weekend. I parked among the RV group and met all of my neighbors. I don't mean to sound so "Gee Golly!" but I am impressed at RVers driving these almost new, multiple-mortgage RVs who have great knowledge of our legandary Travcos. One guy recited every detail about my model... even knew the engine size. He claimed "What a classic!" She turned quite a few heads. Anyway, I just had to brag about the Travco so we could all smile. See you on the open road. Bye. Tony Peregoy Lanett, AL 11/25/97 Dale Ricker, Bad Axe, Mi.1976 27010/14/97 Today, oct. 12th, I met a travco l'espirit on the road in Kinde, Mi.. The owners excitedly wave with thumbs up to me and my wife and we blew our airhorn as we passed. It was a great thrill. Their travco was white with fawn brown striping. She was a beauty. Hope they see this posting and e-mail me back. They were with some other more modern motorhomes and did not stop. But we welcomed their enthusiasum just the same. Tony Peregoy Lanett, AL I just got my 1974 Travco. My father got it a few years ago and redid it inside and out. It has a beautiful paint job and the inside looks up-to-date (not right out of the 70's). He got a newer RV (1978) and gave me the Travco. I love it so far. I drove it from his house in Virginia. It has a Dodge 440, 4bbl engine. Runs great but uses the gas. I have some improvements to make. Maybe I can run some questions by you when I need advice. It might be something you've done before. I read your article about your Travco. My dad reworked the brakes and put wo new boosters on the rear. I have plenty of braking power. As far as engine power, I got up up to 75 on a smooth stretch of interstate and had plenty of power to spare. I didn't want to go any faster and slowed it down to 65 for the long haul home. The generator works great but burns oil. I'll work on that. I took the old 8-trak out and have a new stereo to install. I'm looking forward to working on it and my boys are ready to go see the county. Talk back soon. (Webmaster)Hi Don and Beryl, You are the first response I have had from Grand Rapids. I "discovered" you thanks to a message from Mark York on RV-T and the RV Club. Now you say you are moving to Florida, does that mean you will change your email address? We have a computer in the motorhome but have never been able to plug in through the window or whatever. I need a laptop or one of the palm-puters. As it is I use my daughter's her in Wyoming, another daughter's in Colorado Springs and my son's in San Diego on weekends. We winter in C2C outside of San Diego and I wish I could help you in California but how to do that when I can't stay connected. Still, if you need help and I can work it out, let me know. Can't think of anything better than a rally of Travco's! We bought ours from a car dealer with a less than good reputation not too far north of you. He didn't know what he had and we paid $3600 for it.I knew what Travco was, I had an uncle who had one and shipped it to Australia for a tour. I told my wife that it didn't look like much, but it was quality and it and the repairs needed fit our budget. It was a sound decision, 6 months later we left GR (after her retirement from D&W) and hit the road full time! We have put lots into it, but every dollar has been a good investment. I wonder if those "so many Travco owners" ever use them? In four years we have yet to meet a L'Esprit, and have seen very few Brown City models. I thought they were gone for good after they quit in Brown City, then one day in Florida this great big Travco diesel pusher caught my eye. I then discovered they were bought by Foretravel and were made until 1989 in Nagadoches, TX. Our first trip out was 15 states and 22,000 miles! Since then we have added another 60,000. (I love to drive.) Right now it is sitting in a garage 18 miles east of Gaylord (Vienna Crossing) having its engine removed, rebuilt and reinstalled. We did something to it internally, piston or cracked block, about 4 miles east of there after taking a 3 day cruise with my sister and brother-in-law in their mhome. We all came back in theirs. Thankful it was there and not downtown Chicago or where ever! So if I can believe the speedometer, it went about 175,000. I'm ready to drive it that far again as soon as they let me have it - supposed to be ready about next Monday. I have a friend in Benton Harbor (his dad and uncle started Avion) who has a neighbor that had his Travco repainted - it is beautiful! I'd like to do the same, but it would be expensive. I will definately send you a photo as soon as I get the bus back, so it should be there before you leave (where are you in Florida, my sister winters north of Orlando). How could I send you an .avi file my son took with a Video Cam? Can we hook up computers and send it over Terminal.exe? How would that look on your page???? Our motorhome is a 1976 class C, model name is "L'Esprit", it is 22' and is Travco Royal Brown with white. My daughter is painting a spare tire cover for me that will say, "The Hayward's,traveling in Sherman the Pomeranian's home." Hope that clears it up. BTW, the windshield I need is the upper one, in the cabover. I am not having any luck finding one, but I do have an address in Elkhart where I may be able to have one cut to fit. Court, it has been a pleasure talking to you, I hope we will meet one day. In the meantime, please keep me informed of the progress with the rallies. Who know's, perhaps we could even make it to Florida this winter (but that is a long way from California, where we winter). The Hayward's, full timing in Sherman the Pomeranian's house. Albert Farrell 1972 Winterhaven Florida I have 1971 chase and a 1972 body. I have 750 17 5 lug wheels. I live in Cincinnati Ohio and my travco lives in Winterhaven Florida and travels to and from Disney World Campground several times a year with 5 kids age ranging from 19 years old to 5 months. I have owned my travco for 11 years and have 56 thousand miles on it, new interior and two air conditioners but my gel coat is cracking, which makes it look like it has bricks. I put a new windsheild in it. My travco home has supplied me and family with a very wonderful 11 year adventure and fun, far beyond what a normal motor home could do. Don and Beryl Hayward 1976 L'Esprit On the road, Grand Rapids, MI, June-Aug I asked a stranger on RV Club about his Travco, got a message back informing of your web-site. Saw TravcoStock 98 site (is this the rally he was telling me "Court" is hoping to have? Also saw info on a rally (?) in California. We spend the winters near San Diego, who and where do I find info on this rally. Love our Travco! The exterior, thanks to ProtectAll, original and like new (few stress cracks). Interior has been restained, new carpet (wife couldn't stand the shag), just put in a new ceiling and took out the wood slats in favor of mini-blinds (but we saved the slats). Right now the mhome is new Gaylord getting a new engine, the engine blew a piston. Sure glad it happened now and not on the road to CA. Grandson getting married at St John Vianny Friday, that's why we have not left MI on schedule. Hope the weather holds, we want to visit a daughter in Colorado Springs on the way west. I tried for 4 years to get Travco info on the web, only found Foretravel. Is there someplace I can search for an upper windshield? I am about to go to a plastics place and get an estimate. You don't have a pic of a L'Esprit, can I send you one to scan? Where? Sure glad we found you. Juno will be available here in GR, also in ColSprgs, and San Diego when we get there. We have a computer in the mhome but have not found a park with phone hookups near enough and working. Time to get one of the personal computers with built in modem and email capability - but for now the engine used up this year's budget. Will be very happy to hear from you. Thanks in advance. Look for our spare cover on the road, "The Hayward's, traveling in Sherman the Pomeranian's home!" Bob and Joan Smith 1977 Longmont, Colorado I thought I was the only one on earth who loved old Travcos. I even thought about bringing up a website about them. You beat me to it and have done a TERRIFIC job! I have a restored 77, mechanically perfect with a completely restored interior. It only lacks a new outside paint job. It sat in a shed for nearly 18 years before I found it. It's a honey! Regards, Bob Smith, KØIVV The Webmaster thanks you for the kind words! FRANK DUNN 1977 PRINCE ALBERT SASK. CANADA TRAVCO HAS UNDULATING LINES THAT CURRENT SPORTS CARS WOULD DIE FOR . SOME TIMES I'LL STARE AT OUR TRAVCO 'S REAR END IN AWE , TO THE POINT THAT MY WIFE GETS JEALOUS GOOD JOB ON THIS SITE FRANK Randy Roller Anchorage, AK Our 64 has 23,000 original miles on it...it was purchased new by a tv production co. and gutted. We'd love to see a floor plan for a 1964 318 27' model. We need a passenger side windshield for our cruiser. Any info will be much appreciated. Kevin , Joyce & Shawn McCartney, Lancaster, Ohio We just purchased our Travco.Just brought our baby home last night. On the way home our son saw a 4-5 foot black snake slither from the bathroom heading under the sink area. A search found nothing. Think he's back behind the furnace. Hope he's out soon - we are going camping this weekend! We bought our beauty from a nice man who allowed us to adopt her. He knew we would take care of her. Wonder if he knew we were adopting the snake too? She needs some polishing up - besides that she's in wonderful shape. Previous owner even had a new paint job done. We are so proud of her. Korey Dykstra, Winnipeg Manitoba CanadaI purchased my '73 travco last month. I've always liked the style and looks of the Travco and have always wanted to buy one . I looked at this unit 5 years ago but it was not a good time . It came up for sale again last month and I made the plunge . It is in reasonable shape The power train (413) runs well with exceptional passing ability. I gave it an allignment ( it wandered a bit) and took it for a 200 mi. ride . I got 10.27 mpg. It's a 27 ft. with a pleasant amount of work to do. I've painted that (to me) ugly green stripe and plant to slowly cuxtomize it to my taste . Am happy to have found a travco page and look forward to many more visits. See you , Korey Roger O'Connell 1968 Prescott (area),Az. The duals fell off my Travco traveling down the interstate. we all fine and really miss it. Currently battling with insurance as to it's value. We would love to find another. Any help is appreciated. joseph d akers jr.,kailua, kona, hawaii 808-329-8877 daytimes aloha webmaster could you modify my name in the list of members to include my e mail address and please add my wife's first name "moon" , she is the daughter of the first owner-royce and fran iglehart who were #1201 in my travco member book. i also am a multiple ase master and have over 20 years of heavy vehicle experience and would be glad to help with people's problems and ideas. my vote for the location start off for travstock would be somewhere in the western united states since that's where i leave our travco. wish i could have it here in hawaii but the shipping and the salt air cause me to have it as a mainland home. has any one ever thought of or modified their travco to include a 3rd rear tag axle with air ride on both rear axles with brakes on the 3rd axle to give it more brake shoe surface and i'm also going to modify a double piggybacked 21/2 ton styled hydrovac so the travco could actually make an emergency stop if ever needed. thanks much,
