Ceiling Panels & Interior Carpeting
by Randall Canfield

I purchased this 270 in Nov of 2001. Never did like all the patches on the roof, so I decided to replace it. I found a fiberglass panel at Lowe’s/Home Depot for $25.00 per sheet. I thought this would be an excellent material to replace the interior roof. It was flexible and easy to cut. It couldn’t mold or warp and the color was permanent. The roof is the first thing to go in when it was built so it would be last thing to come out. Below are pictures before I started.

I managed to take out the interior over one weekend and the pictures below are what we were left with.

The next weekend we started to install the roof panels. I snapped a chalk line where the steal ribs/beams where. I didn’t to put in a lot of screws yet because we had a lot of walls to put back and they would hold up the roof. The reason you see the shower is because it wouldn’t fit through the door. As we worked we moved it forward and aft.

Removed the old carpet and started clean things up so we could put the new carpet in. Easiest thing to do so far if you have a staple gun. Also wanted to do a few things different as we put it back together. First I changed the outlet box for the refrigerator so I could run 110v to the bathroom.

With the bathroom all most done I put in a toilet tissue holder in the cabinet and replaced the faucet with one we could actually use. You can also see the new outlet. The new ceiling makes everything look clean and new. We also wall papered the side panels before they were put back up. I replaced the showerhead with one that would give us a few more inches of height. Now there’s a bathroom you can read your morning paper in.

Next I wanted to permanently mount the microwave and add more counter space. I decided to get rid of the closet at the back and take the table from the front and cut it for a counter in the back. I also wanted to rebuild the bed area with better supports and enclose the area under it for storage.

The front cabinet on the passenger side was damaged when I bought it so I decided to shorten it to 3 doors rather than 4. I also wanted to put in a table to hold a small 13” TV and DVD player. It has an outlet that is wired to an inverter. The inverter is mounted in an outside compartment to cut down on the interference. There is a switch next to the outlet that will turn the inverter on and off from the inside.

I also moved the couch to the other (driver) side and removed the two dinette seats. We wanted more room up front and had used the table earlier for a counter.

The hardest part was re-carpeting the doghouse. I’m going to have to redo it a second time. The next thing is to get the seats reupholstered to match the carpet and wallpaper. But I’m going to design the couch to pull out into a bed first and get it all reupholstered at the same time.

I only used 5 panels to replace the roof and also bought molding for the seams. Also paid for new carpet and the fixtures. Total I think I just spent $250.00 on the whole job.  I’ll post pics when I figure out how to make the couch fold out into a bed and reupholster the seats.
